The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 393 STANDEN, Sidney Harold WWII Sidney came to Saskatchewan where he taught at the Viscount Consolidated School from 1937 to 1941. We presume this is when he was called up to join the Army where he served as a Captain during World War II. There is no further mention of him. STANG, William Alexander WWII William was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan on October 24, 1914. He joined the 1st Yorkton Light Anti-Aircraft Battery on September 27, 1939, served in Europe and Britain, and was discharged at war’s end in 1945. He returned to his previous employment at Segals store in Stockholm, Saskatchewan and then began his own general store business in Atwater, Saskatchewan. Some years later, he became employed as the paymaster in the offices of International Minerals Corporation at the potash mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. He and his wife, Anne, had four daughters and one son. William had been a member of the Stockholm Legion Branch265 until he passed away on January 18, 1986. STENSRUD, Merle Russell WWII Merle was born on April 13, 1919 in Meacham, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and was discharged in 1945. He served at the air raid shelters in transportation and guard duty for the duration of his service in England. Because of this trauma, Merle took several years to recuperate, undergoing several shock (electric) treatments which were hard on his system. The family farm in Meacham was his salvation along with the family who never lost their faith in him. Merle received the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Special Bar (awarded when in the Battle of Britain). After his recovery, Merle worked for the City of Regina until he retired. He raised four children with his wife, Evelyn Becker, and passed away in 1987.
