WWII Otto was born on October 26, 1907 in White Russia and came with his parents to Saskatchewan’s Young district in the early 1900s. In 1926, he came to the Plunkett area, worked for district farmers and then the Department of Highways until he retired in 1972. In February 1942, he joined the Army Service Corps, served in Canada and was discharged in 1944. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He raised six children with his wife, Evelyn Beadle, and was Overseer and village councilor of Plunkett, as well as a representative to the Boards of Lanigan Hospital and the Nursing Home. Otto was the only one of the family to have his surname ‘Anglicized’. His half-brothers Jake, Rinhold, Art, Carl and Egon, who all enlisted, spelled it ‘Schumaker’. Otto was a member of Viscount Legion Branch 271 and he died on January 27, 1990. SICHKARYK, Paul WWII Paul was born in May 1916 and grew up on the family farm north of Plunkett, Saskatchewan. He took his early schooling at Badger and moved with the family to Carvel, Alberta in 1926. He enlisted in the Army in October 1942 and served overseas, where he was wounded twice. He was discharged in November 1945. After his discharge, Paul married Tillie Malowski, the young lady he’d corresponded with during the War. They had ten children, which included two sets of twins. Paul worked as a heavy duty mechanic until he retired. SIEKAWITCH (SPENCER), Leo WWII Leo was born in Viscount, Saskatchewan in 1915. He went to school there and changed his surname from Siekawitch to Spencer before joining the Army where he served as a Corporal during World War II. After the war, he came back to work for a while with his dad, Tony, the GM dealer in Viscount. He then attained a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1950. He went to Alberta to work on the pipelines doing well inspections with the then new technology of X-ray. He raised two children with his wife, Beth McCublin, and they lived and retired in Edmonton, AB. Leo passed away around 2001.
