The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 281 MOEN, Carl Johan WWII Carl was born on January 17, 1922 in Viscount, SK where he grew up and went to school. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 and served as a Lieutenant at the Halifax Harbour, McNab Island and in the North Atlantic. He did anti-submarine and anti-torpedo research and development, degassing, antimagnetic mine work and acoustic trials with torpedoes to decoy torpedoes away from ships. After his discharge in 1946, he earned a Master of Science degree, minored in Physics and Math, and went to Toronto, ON. Carl raised four children with his wife, Rachel Young, who served with the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Carl spent his adult life in R & D with different companies as a physicist in ElectroVoice, at Kimberly Clark and Beloit. He died on June 2, 1994. His brother, Harald, also served in World War II. MOEN, Edward Sr. WWI Edward was born in 1895 in Sjoa, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. Edward, his mother and two brothers and sister came to Canada to join his father and brother in 1910. He farmed north of Viscount, SK then took land in the Rutan district. He joined the Army in the spring of 1918 and served in England with the 1st Depot, Saskatchewan Regiment but missed the draft to France because of an emergency appendectomy. He was discharged in June 1919. Edward married Anne Hawrysh with whom he had four children. After her death, he married Clara Franson and raised two more children. Edward farmed in the Choiceland area until his retirement in 1967. Edward died in 1979. MOEN, Harald WWII Harald was born on August 3, 1920 in Viscount, SK where he also attended school. He took part in many sports and worked on the farm before enlisting with his brother, Carl. Harald joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served in radar in North Africa and was a substitute drinking-water truck driver in Burma. After his discharge in 1945, he obtained his Bachelor of Physics degree at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON and a Master’s degree in Radio Physics at McGill University in Montreal, QC. He held various jobs, did secret work for the government, and was employed by Marconi Corp, a Division of Atomic Energy, and consulted in cancer therapy. He married Beatrice Andersen and they raised one son. Harald died on November 18, 1996.
