The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 273 MENZIES, Duncan WWII Duncan was born in Plunkett, SK and attended the nearby Glynfield country school. His uncle, Willie Menzies, served in WWI while Duncan joined the Army and served in World War II. He raised two children with his wife, Elsie Richter, and they lived in Calgary, Alberta. MENZIES, William “Willie” WWI Willie was born on November 10, 1886 in Perthshire, Scotland and came to Canada in 1913 with his brother, Thomas. Before the war, he was a carpenter and had served two years each with the Perth Royal Highlanders and the Highland Cycles Battalion. He enlisted on September 23, 1914 and served with the 10th Battalion in Canada, England and France where he was wounded in the leg in 1918, then hospitalized in England until the war ended. He then returned to carpentry in Humboldt, SK and in 1940, moved to Prince Rupert, BC to work for the American Army Services, receiving a Civilian Service Emblem for faithful, satisfactory service. Willie then lived on his brother, Tommy’s farm, did local carpentry and enjoyed curling at the Glynfield Rink. He lived in Plunkett with Tom and his wife, Susan, until he died in 1980. He was a member of Humboldt Legion Branch 28. MESZAROS, Steve WWII Steve was born in Plunkett, SK on August 4, 1916. He was the son of Steve and Julia Meszaros who came from Hungary in 1905 to homestead in the Plunkett area. Steve Jr. was educated at the Eltham and Plunkett schools and he taught at Wakaw, SK for a year before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1938. He trained in Kingston, ON and served as a Lieutenant with the South Saskatchewan Regiment, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps in France and England. Steve was killed on August 28, 1944 at Caen, near Forêt de la Londe in France and is buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. While in London in 1941, he married Victoria and they had a daughter.
