The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 271 MELNICK, Joseph “Joe” WWII Joe was born in Plunkett, SK. Because his mother, Catherine, had died when he was young, he and Nick lived with their aunt, Mary Zurko, in Plunkett where he took his early schooling. Joe and his brothers, Steve and Nick, all enlisted. After the war, Joe was in the construction business in Ontario, first in London then later in Ancaster until he retired in 1983. MELNICK (MELNYK), Nick WWII Nick’s family (originally Melnyk) came from Poland to a farm north of Plunkett, SK in 1911. Nick was born and educated there and was raised by his aunt, Mary Zurko, after his mother died. His family, originally named Melnyk, came from Poland in 1911 to a farm north of Plunkett. Nick and his two brothers, Steve and Joe, all enlisted, Nick joining the Royal Canadian Air Force and serving overseas as a Flying Officer (Air Bomber) with the # 49 Squadron RAF. He was killed on April 11, 1944 when his Lancaster went missing during a night raid on Aachen, Germany. Nick is buried at Schoonselhof Cemetery, in Antwerp, Belgium. There is a geomemorial in Saskatchewan named in his honour: Melnick Lake, northeast of Wollaston Lake, at (64L9) 58o 44’ 102o 12’. MELNICK, Steve WWII Steve was born in New Jersey, USA but attended the Lucasville country school. He and his brothers, Joe and Nick, all enlisted in the Army and served in World War II. Steve married, raised two children, and died in Vancouver in 1963. Melnyk is the original spelling of his surname.
