The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 247 MacLEAN, Hugh John William PEACETIME Hugh was born on November 13, 1925 in Elstow, Saskatchewan and he later served in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve during peacetime. He worked at the Saskatoon Star Phoenix in the composing room. Hugh died on April 16, 2006. MacMURCHY, Edward Douglas WWII Edward was born in Viscount, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Flying Officer with the #428 Ghost Squadron RCAF Bomb Aimer. Edward’s Halifax was shot down by a fighter and crashed near a potassium pit at Kalischacht, south of Ronnenberg, during a night raid on Hanover, Germany. He was killed on Sept 27, 1943 and is buried at Hamburg War Cemetery in Germany. A geo-memorial has been named in his honour in Saskatchewan: MacMurchy Lake, south of Porcupine Plain, at (63D6) 10o 39’ 9o W’. MAGUIRE, James Frankish WWII James was born to James and Bertha Maguire on May 6, 1915 in Colonsay, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 29, 1940 in Edmonton, AB and served as a Flight Lieutenant with the 37th Squadron in Canada and in the Mediterranean. He and six other crew members were reported missing and were presumed to have died on September 14, 1942 when his Wellington was lost near Lagos, Nigeria (West Africa). Having no known grave, James’ name is inscribed on the Malta Memorial in Valetta. He left a wife, Bernice Luella, in Edmonton, SK. James was awarded the Air Observer’s Badge on February 2, 1941 as well as the 1939-45 Star, the African Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45.
