The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 119 ECKSTEIN, John WWII John was born in Plunkett, SK in 1922 and went to school in the Badger district. He worked for area farmers in the summer and in bush camps in northern Ontario during the winter. He also worked at a gold mine in Beardmore and a nickel mine in Sudbury before enlisting in the Army. His brother, William, also served in WWII. John married Grace Matycio and he farmed around Plunkett for a few years, and then worked at the Canadian Pacific Railway Roundhouse in Watrous, SK. He moved to St. Catherine’s to work at Thompson Products until he took up carpentry which led him to return to Saskatoon, SK where he worked at his craft until he retired in 1985. John died in 2000. ECKSTEIN, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Plunkett, SK. He attended Badger School and helped on the farm as a youth and later married Mary McClure. He joined the Army and served in World War II, along with his brother, John. After the war, he worked at Thompson Products in St. Catherines, Ontario. EGETO, Alex WWII Alex was born in Hungary prior to 1905. He served in the Canadian Forces, along with his brothers, Frank and Titus. He married Mary Poszar and they raised three children. Alex farmed in Plunkett, SK area then moved to a tobacco farm in Ontario. He also operated a grocery store for a time then went to work for Fleet Aircraft Manufacturing where he worked until his retirement in 1970. Alex passed away in 1973.
