The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 423 ZIMMER, Gustaf “Gus” WWII Gus joined the Army and served in World War II. He stayed in the Forces until his discharge in 1948. He then operated a TV repair service and raised one daughter with his wife, Gwen Paulett of Plunkett. The family moved to Barrie, Ontario where Gus lived and passed away. ZIMMER, Ronald “Ron” WWII Ron joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Sergeant in World War II. He was an Air Gunner with the No. 405 City of Vancouver Pathfinder Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. His Lancaster went missing on February 1, 1944 during a night raid on Berlin, Germany. Ron is buried at Oud Schoonebeek General Cemetery, Schoonebeek, at Drenthe in the Netherlands. There is a geo-memorial named in his honour: Zimmer Island, in eastern Lac La Ronge, at (73P1) 55◦ 07 ◦ 104◦ 52 ◦. ZONEY, Nicholas Franklin “Nick” WWII Nick was born on December 23, 1918 in Young, SK and attended the Morris and Rideau country schools. He worked as a farm hand in the Plunkett and Melfort districts and in 1942, married Marie Morelli with whom he raised four children. He enlisted in the Army on November 21, 1941 and served as a Sergeant and a cook in Canada, Italy, France and Germany. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France and Germany Star, the 193945 Star, the Italy Star, and the Defence Medal. Discharged on November 30, 1945, Nick then lived in Young, driving a cream truck and working for a time in Saskatoon, SK at Marshal Wells Wholesale. He returned to Young and became manager of the Coop store, but was forced to retire in May 1963 due to his health. Nick passed away on April 28, 1964.
