The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 419 YOUNG (nee WEBSTER), Gwendoline “Gwen” WWII Gwen was born on April 15, 1918 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. She joined the England’s Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in 1939 and was initially a nurse for two years. She then switched to the RAF in the Radio Control Department where she served until the end of the war. She married Allan Young of Viscount, SK in 1945 in Llandrindod Wells, Radnorshire in Wales. Gwen sailed on the then hospital ship “SS Letitia”, arriving in Halifax on March 4, 1946 and reaching Viscount on March 12. She and Allan moved to the farm in 1947 where they raised two children. They had a mixed farm and Gwen was very active in community activities, especially the St. Paul’s Anglican Ladies Auxiliary. YOUNG, James Roslyn “Ross” WWII Ross was born on January 25, 1921 to James M. and Edith Young in Canora, SK but the family lived briefly at Invermay before moving to a farm in Viscount, SK where he went to school and enjoyed sports, especially hockey and baseball. On summer holidays, he did telephone work with his dad and his brother, John, who enlisted in WWII. Ross joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Flight Sergeant in Canada, France, Germany and England. He was killed on May 2, 1942 when his Blenheim crashed during a bomb training flight from the #13 Operational Training unit at Billesdon, Leicestershire, England. Ross is buried at St. John the Baptist churchyard, North Luffenham, Rutland, England. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star and the France and Germany Star. A geo-memorial was named in his honour: Young Lake, northeast of Engemann Lake, at (74J7, 8) 58◦ 20 ◦ 106◦ 30.◦ YOUNG, John Garnet “Jack” WWII Jack was born on February 3, 1916 in Invermay, SK but went to school at Viscount then later worked as a linesman with his dad for Viscount Rural Telephone Company. He joined the Army in 1942 and served as a Staff Sergeant with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in Canada, France, England and Germany. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, and the France and Germany Star. After his discharge, he bought land in the Viscount area and he also became an undertaker in Viscount with his father. He married Ethel Northgraves and was active in the RCL Viscount Branch 271, the Watrous Legion Branch 174, and was a 57-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Viscount and also of Wynyard. John’s brother, Roslyn Young, was killed in action in WWII. Jack died on November 22, 1994.
