The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 395 VANHOUWE, Henry Ernest “Van” WWII Van was born on June 3, 1918 in Semans, Saskatchewan. He attended school at Viscount and Plunkett and worked on the farm before he enlisted and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. His brother, Andy, also enlisted. After his discharge, Van farmed and then worked at the Lodestar Mine near Plunkett. He also worked in the oil fields and on road construction before retiring in Saskatoon. He married Evelyn Mills with whom he had two children and later married Elsie (Gerling) Bruce. They spent many winters in Victoria and summers at Turtle Lake, SK. Van enjoyed boating, fishing and visiting and he died on March 17, 2003. VANHOUWE, Irene WWII Irene was born and grew up on a farm northeast of Plunkett, Saskatchewan where she also attended school. She served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and was a cousin to Henry and Andy Vanhouwe, who also enlisted. She lived in Regina and had one daughter, Lynn Csada. Irene died in the 1950s. VERES, Stephen John “Steve” WWII Steve was born on December 23, 1923 in Plunkett, SK and was the only living child of Alex and Rose Veres, homesteaders in the Plunkett area in 1908. Growing up, he worked on the farm and attended the Plunkett and Badger schools. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 8, 1942 and served as a Flight Sergeant with No. 356 Squadron RAF as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner instead of as a pilot, due to his eyesight. Steve’s Liberator was bombing Japanese troop concentrations at Alugale when it burst into flames and crashed west of Laung Chaung, Maya Peninsula, Myanmar (Burma). He died on June 12, 1945 and was buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Rangoon, Burma. A geomemorial in Saskatchewan was named in his honour: Veres Lake, southeast of Lloyd Lake, at (74F2) 57 04 108 35 .
