The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 375 SMITH, Fredrick James WWI Fredrick was born in Scotland in 1858. He served with the Northwest Mounted Police in 1885, and later enlisted in World War I in Britain. Fredrick passed away in 1944. SMITH, Stanley Chester WWII Stanley was born in Leask, Saskatchewan in 1919. He joined the Army with the 1st Battalion Saskatoon Light Infantry and went overseas to take part in the invasion of Sicily, Italy on July 10, 1943. He later saw action in Northwest Europe in March 1945. He served with the Straight Machine Gun Battalion in the Army Reserve Unit, and served as a Military Attaché in Israel, Japan, Iran and Austria. For his service, Stanley received the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, and the Canadian Efficiency Decoration. Stanley passed away in 1975. SOISETH, Nels WWII Nels was born in Alamo, North Dakota, USA, on August 27, 1918. He enlisted in 1941 and went to Hamilton Trade School to train as an electrician and radio technician. In July 1944, he landed in France and helped in the liberation of Caen, France. He went on to Holland and Belgium, and was in Germany at the end of the war, when his regiment took more than one thousand German prisoners in the liberation of Ostend. He received the War Medal 1939-45, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After the war ended, he spent several months in Holland where he was married in December of 1945. Nels and his wife returned to Canada and lived in Melfort, Saskatchewan until 1972, at which time he bought a business in North Battleford, SK. Nels passed away in July 2000.
