The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 309 MORPHY, James A. “Jim” WWII Jim was born in Saltcoats, SK in 1917 and took his schooling at Auckland School, north of Viscount. He worked for area farmers and in Manitoba before he joined the Army in 1939 and served in France. Jim and his brothers, John and Russell, all enlisted (Russell was conscripted) and their first cousins, Bill and George Morphy, also enlisted. When Jim retired, he made his home in Clearbrook, BC with his wife, Anna. MORPHY, John Nelson “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Saltcoats, SK in 1918 and went to school at Pilot Grove and Auckland, north of Viscount. He is the son of James Alfred and Alwilda T. Morphy who came to farm in the Brithdir district (north of Plunkett, SK) in 1929. He joined the Army and served as a Trooper in North Africa and Italy with the 8th Princess Louise’s (New Brunswick) Hussars. It was after he was transferred to Italy as a tank driver that he was wounded and died on September 6, 1944. Jack is buried at Montecchio War Cemetery, Montelabbate, Pesaro, Italy. A geo-memorial in Saskatchewan is named in his honour: Morphy Lake, northeast of La Loche, at (74C15) 56 50 108 54 . His brothers, James and Russell, also enlisted. MORPHY, Russell WWII Russell was born in Saltcoats, SK. He joined the Army and spent five years in the army reserve in Germany. Russell and his two brothers, Jim and John, all enlisted, as did his cousins, George and Bill. After his discharge, Russell worked in Hope, BC and was en route to the Mascot Mines as a mechanic when he was killed in a snow slide in March 1972.
