The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 295 MELNICK, Nick WWII Nick’s family (originally Melnyk) came from Poland to a farm north of Plunkett, SK in 1911. Nick was born and educated there and was raised by his aunt, Mary Zurko, after his mother died. His family, originally named Melnyk, came from Poland in 1911 to a farm north of Plunkett. Nick and his two brothers, Steve and Joe, all enlisted, Nick joining the Royal Canadian Air Force and serving overseas as a Flying Officer (Air Bomber) with the #49 Squadron RAF. He was killed on April 11, 1944 when his Lancaster went missing during a night raid on Aachen, Germany. Nick is buried at Schoonselhof Cemetery, in Antwerp, Belgium. There is a geomemorial in Saskatchewan named in his honour: Melnick Lake, northeast of Wollaston Lake, at (64L9) 58 44 102 12 . MENZIES, Duncan WWII Duncan was born in Plunkett, SK and attended the nearby Glynfield country school. His uncle, Willie Menzies, served in WWI while Duncan joined the Army and served in World War II. He raised two children with his wife, Elsie Richter, and they lived in Calgary, Alberta. MENZIES, William “Willie” WWI Willie was born on November 10, 1886 in Perthshire, Scotland and came to Canada in 1913 with his brother, Thomas. Before the war, he was a carpenter and had served two years each with the Perth Royal Highlanders and the Highland Cycles Battalion. He enlisted on September 23, 1914 and served with the 10th Battalion in Canada, England and France where he was wounded in the leg in 1918, then hospitalized in England until the war ended. He then returned to carpentry in Humboldt, SK and in 1940, moved to Prince Rupert, BC to work for the American Army Services, receiving a Civilian Service Emblem for faithful, satisfactory service. Willie then lived on his brother, Tommy’s farm, did local carpentry and enjoyed curling at the Glynfield Rink. He lived in Plunkett with Tom and his wife, Susan, until he died in 1980. He was a member of RCL Humboldt Branch 28.
