The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 287 MCCLUGHAN, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Duval, SK on June 16, 1917. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 29, 1941 and served as an orderly in the Medical Corps in Edmonton, AB, Rivers, MB and in Topcliffe, Yorkshire. He was discharged on September 6, 1945. He started working for Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in September 1945 and continued working there as Country Elevator Agent until he retired on June 30, 1982. Bill married Barrie McKenzie on August 16, 1954 and they had two children. He was a member of RCL Nokomis Branch 290 for thirty-three years, serving as President, Secretary, Deputy Zone Commander and Jubilee Chairman. He was active in the community in various organizations and was chairman of the local Hospital Board when he passed away on December 22, 1986. McCONKEY, Thomas WWI Thomas was born in Ireland and he immigrated to Viscount, SK with his family in 1909. He farmed with his dad in the Lonsdale area north of Viscount and was educated there before going on to become a teacher. He joined the Army and served during World War I. Thomas married Ellen Wilmot and they later moved to Richmond, BC. McCOSH, William Thomas “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan in 1925. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy at HMCS Unicorn in Saskatoon on July 10, 1944 and completed his wireless operator training in St. Hyacinthe, QC at the complete wireless station just outside of Montreal. He then reported to Stadacona in Halifax, NS and sailed to HMCS Niobe in Scotland where the wireless operators were to relieve the WRENS. Bill ran the telephone switchboard until the war was over in Europe and then signed up for the war in the Pacific which ended when he was on a 60-day leave in Canada. During all his travels, he took his trumpet with him and as official “bugler”, was called upon to play the last Post and Reveille many times. Bill was a member of RCL Melfort Branch 30 for over sixty-six years and he currently resides in his hometown of Melfort, SK with his wife, Bernice.
