The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 277 LATOURNEAU, Henry WWII Henry was born in Edam, SK. With his brother, Earl, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy while their brother, Eugene, joined the Army. While in the Navy, Henry met and married Lois Tyson, with whom he had a daughter. He passed away in 1961. LEKNESS, Christian “Chris” WWII Christian was born on November 5, 1921 and raised in Saskatchewan’s Hatfield district. He farmed before enlisting in the Navy on February 15, 1943. He served on HMCS Unicorn, Naden and Burrard, where duties included inspecting all merchant ships for radios, cameras, etc. His anti-submarine ship, HMCS Kokanee, escorted merchant ships seven times across the North Atlantic, from St. John’s, NL to Londonderry, Ireland. After VE Day, his ship was to be refitted for the Japanese Zone but the war ended and Chris was demobilized in August 1945. After the war, he spent 2 ½ years with the Regina City Police, 5 years with the Imperial Oil Refinery, farmed for several years and worked for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance for 13 years. In 1948, Chris married Ida Watson, had two children, and he was a member of RCL Nokomis Branch 290 for sixty years. LENIUK, John WWII John was born in Carmel, SK on December 15, 1915 to Roman and Maggie Leniuk, pioneers from Ukraine who came to homestead in the Brithdir district of Saskatchewan. John was working in a northern Saskatchewan sawmill when he enlisted. His siblings, Peter, Donald and Marie, also enlisted in the Army, while his sister, Pearl, was with the Royal Canadian Air Force. John served overseas as a Private with the Saskatoon Light Infantry (M.G.), 1st Infantry Division, Support Battalion of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps. A geo-memorial was named in his honour: Leniuk Lake, east of Charlebois Lake, Sask. (74P7) 59 28 104 39 . John was killed in action on July 24, 1943 and is buried in the Agira Canadian War Cemetery, in Enna, Sicily, Italy.
