VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 18 / 61 MacLEAN, John Angus WWI Angus was born in Lewes District. He completed degrees in science at both Mount Allison University and the University of British Columbia. He left farming to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and was discharged in 1947. He achieved the rank of Wing Commander and served in Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After MacLean returned to PEI, he was elected to Parliament in a 1951 by-election and held his seat until he left federal politics in 1976. MacLean served in the cabinet of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker as Minister of Fisheries. In November 1976, MacLean was elected to the provincial legislature and lead the party to victory in 1979. MacLean retired as premier in 1981 and returned to the family farm. In 1991 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He died on February 15, 2000. Today, there is a provincial government building named after him which is located in Charlottetown and there is also an award named after him (Hon. J. Angus MacLean Natural Areas Award), which is given to an individual, group or agency who has made a significant contribution to protect the natural areas of PEI.
