He enlisted in January 1941 and was sent overseas in December 1941 with the RCAF, as an air-gunner. During a mission over Cologne, the raiding craft that he was in went into engine failure. One propeller of the Halifax Bomber was completely shot off as the plane flew over Germany and caught a flurry of ack-ack fire, to the wings, ailerons and fuselage. The astro-dome was shot off and the plane rolled over on its back. A bail out order was issued and then the pilot righted the plane and 3 motors revived, one barely working. The order was rescinded prior to engaging action to the order. It is a miracle that Rae survived to tell this story. Rae flew with the 408 Flying Goose Squad. He returned to Wiarton where he married and raised a family. Lest we forget the men who walked among us. Rae was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wiarton Branch 208. Rae passed away on May 30, 2002. CALDECOTT, Hary William Harry was born on June 14, 1892, in Cambridge, England, to Harry William and Alice Caldecott, along with one sibling, Rose.
