Selected for submarine service, he earned his dolphins on HMCS Onondaga, qualified as a Navy diver, and later served on all of Canada’s Oberon-class submarines, including as part of the commissioning crew of HMCS Okanagan. After leaving the navy, David joined Health and Welfare Canada, working in the Toronto and Sarnia offices before completing French-language training and becoming District Manager in Sault Ste. Marie. He later continued his career with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food until retiring in 2014. He has been residing in Alliston since February 2021 and is a four-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Alliston Branch 171. David remains active in veteran support as Veterans Service Officer for the Alliston Legion, Vice President of the Unseen Warriors, and as a member of the Submariners Association of Canada. ANDERSON, Wesley William J. Wes was born in Pembroke, Ontario on March 19, 1947, and after high school joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968 and trained as an Airframe Technician. His postings included CFB Uplands, 1 CAG Maintenance Squadron, BadenSoellingen Germany, CFB Chilliwack CFOC, CFB Edmonton BAMEO, 5 AMU Lahr Germany where he was promoted to CWO and then posted to NATO-AWACS Geilenkirchen as CWO Aircraft OPS, then to 443 Squadron in Sydney, British Columbia and finally to NDHQ-DGAEPM where he retired in July 2000. His honours and awards include the CD 2 and the SSM-NATO. Wes played on many intersection, base, regional, and national fastball teams that won numerous regional and national championships. He married Penny Fries in December 1968 and together they raised two sons, Dean and Jason, and enjoyed four grandchildren. In later years, Wes was sometimes referred to as the “mayor of Nicolet Way” in Orleans, Ontario and was famous for his gardens and family pool BBQs with the renowned “Wes burgers” at the top of the menu. His infectious shoulder-shaking laugh was usually the highlight of any discussion. Many will remember Wes for his knack for getting things done by himself, or if help was needed, his skill in gathering the personnel and wherewithal to do exactly that. Never too shy to say what needed to be said to whomever it needed to be said to; Wes breathed Canadian Air Force air. After battling cancer, Wes passed away on June 9, 2019 in Ottawa.
