Marie, Ontario when he enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Battalion on December 28, 1915. He had two months service with the 51st Soo Rifles prior to enlistment with the 119th. John held the rank of lieutenant when he sailed for England on August 8, 1916. While in England, he was transferred to the 58th Battalion. John was killed in action on August 27, 1918 in France and is buried in the Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery. His name is inscribed on the Sault Ste. Marie cenotaph, in the St. Andrew’s United Church and in the Hathery Masonic Lodge, that was named in his honour. WEBB, Maurice Wilson Maurice was born on March 21, 1903 on a farm near Big Bay Point, Innisfil, Ontario where he spent most of his early years working on family farms. In 1941, at the age of 38, Maurice enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in Toronto where he was first stationed at Manning Depot. Manning Depot was housed at the Canadian National Exhibition Grounds in renovated livestock barns. From there, Maurice was sent to New Brunswick but by December 1942, he was back in Ontario in Angus just 35 km from home. Angus was adjacent to but separate from Camp Borden, Canada’s most crucial military training facility. His next post was Goose Bay, Labrador in 1943 where Maurice remained until 1945. Labrador and Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949 and were considered a separate British Dominion. Servicemen stationed there were considered as serving overseas, just as if they had been posted in the UK. Accordingly, this entitled these servicemen to certain military benefits such as a high pay scale. On January 15, 1945, Maurice’s wife suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Maurice was discharged on compassionate grounds and returned just a few months prior to the end of the war. Maurice passed away on August 5, 1947.
