He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in 1953 and began his military career with Basic Training at Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in St. Jean, PQ. He later completed Radio Electronics Training at CFB Clinton and Armament Systems Training at CFB Borden. Gordon specialized on the Canadair Sabre, the RCAF’s frontline day fighter during the early Cold War. It was widely regarded as one of the finest airsuperiority jet fighters of the 1950s, renowned for its speed, maneuverability, and combat performance. At the time Gordon trained on the aircraft, the Sabres were being equipped with advanced electronic gun-sighting systems, technology then new to RCAF aircraft and a major advancement in aerial combat capability. Gordon later deployed overseas with 422 Squadron to Rabat, then part of French Morocco, where Canadian Sabre squadrons honed their air-to-air gunnery and combat flying skills over Atlantic training ranges. As part of Canada’s NATO commitment during the early years of the ColdWar, all 12 RCAF Sabre squadrons spent time at the Rabat gunnery ranges preparing for potential conflict with the Warsaw Pact in Europe. Gordon was later posted to CFB Baden-Soellingen in West Germany, serving with Wing Maintenance at one of Canada’s principal NATO air bases. Gordon served until 1958. He has been residing in Uxbridge since 1979 and is a four-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Sunderland/Uxbridge Branch. We thank him for his service.
