SMITH, Marland Alfred Marland was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on February 27, 1931. He served in the Canadian Army from August 26, 1950 until March 14, 1954. He joined the Army when he was 21 years old. He had decided, along with a group of his friends, to enlist after listening to all the stories from World War II. He trained with the Lord Strathcona Force as a Trooper/Mechanic/Sherman Tank Driver. During his deployment to fight in the Korean War, he was involved in many combat missions and was injured. He never spoke about his experiences once he came home. The only time he spoke about some of his experiences was during his return visit to Korea in 2015 as a guest of the South Korean Government to honour the Canadian Veterans who were the only soldiers who had volunteered to go to their war. During that visit, he talked about his training exercises in Alberta and his travels upon deployment. He talked about his ocean crossings on the troop ships as well. He said the conditions and the sea sick soldiers made the journey horrendous. Upon returning to Sault Ste. Marie in 1954, he joined the RCEME (Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). He obtained the rank of Sergeant. He became a fuel truck driver for British American Oil, then he opened his own service garage under the BA banner at the corner of Queen and Bay Streets. He had been employed by Algoma Steel prior to enlisting and then returned to the Steel Plant later on, eventually retiring after thirty years of service as an electrician. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. Marland passed away on January 31, 2018. We Will Remember Them Ontario Command
