He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and served with 3rd Canadian Division. Joining the army gave him purpose and a new family. He was a gunner and he used a rapid fire Bofors 40 mm gun anti-aircraft weapon in World War II. It was used into the 1990s. He was discharged on April 2, 1946. Gordon married an English girl who declined to immigrate to Canada. He spent his career in Toronto at Acme farmers dairy which became Dominion and Sealtest dairy. He had a love for fishing and gardening. Gordon passed away on November 28, 2008. ROSE, Ernest Ernest Rose was born on April 30, 1889, to Andrew Rose and Maria Fairbairn of Aurora, Ontario. Ernest enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) as a Private with the 220th Battalion, C.E.F. in Aurora on July 31, 1916, and sailed with his unit to Liverpool aboard the S.S. Olympic on April 29, 1917. He was transferred between several battalions and after arriving in France on March 26, 1918, he remained with the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Centre until he was assigned to the 15th Infantry Battalion, a Highland regiment, on August 13, along with 64 other soldiers. Ernest was not long with his new battalion when, during what would later be called The Battle of Scarpe, his unit was occupying a forward position South-East of Chérisy. The trenches there were made up mostly of shell holes with poor cover from German fire. On August 29, 1918, Ernest Rose was one of three soldiers instantly killed at this location when a shell exploded directly beside him in his trench. He was 29 years old and was buried at the Achicourt Road Cemetery in France. ROSE, Mishel “Mel” Mishel was born on January 22, 1921, in Port Robinson, Ontario. He joined the RCAF (Regular Force) on June 16, 1942, and began Air Training on February 24, 1943. He was qualified Airbomber (Navigator) on May 5, 1944, in Portage la Prairie, MB. He was assigned to 356 Squadron which was a part of the Strategic Air Force – Eastern Command. Mishel trained in B-25 Mitchells and B-24 Liberators, but his combat missions were all in Liberators. In the rank of Flying Officer, logbooks describe his role as a Bomb Aimer. His squadron operated out of Salbonie, India and later the Cocos Islands. Mishel took part in bombing missions over Bangkok, the capital of Siam, the Burma cities of Mandalay, Rangoon, and Ramree Island. Bombing missions also included bridges of the Bangkok Moulmein Railway that traversed the River Kwai which featured in the 1957 film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. For his service, Mishel was awarded the Burma Star, 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp, Air Bomber’s Badge and the Operational Wing. He was discharged on February 21, 1946. He was a 20-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 in St. Catharines, ON. Mishel passed away on February 17, 1968. We Will Remember Them Ontario Command
