In 1916, he enrolled in McMaster University. After completing his first year, he returned home to work on the farm. Shortly after coming home, at nineteen years of age, Ormond answered the call to serve. He and a neighbour, Norman Hoffmeyer, went to Mitchell to join up. On the way, they saw a poster that read: “Why walk to the war when you can ride. Join the artillery.” So, they took the train to Stratford on May 29, 1917, to enlist joining the 64th Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery as Gunners. Like young men of his generation, Ormond left behind the familiarity of home for the uncertainty of war. In November 1917, he sailed overseas aboard the SS Megantic, bound for England and eventual deployment to the Western Front. Despite the demands of military life, Ormond remained mindful of his responsibilities at home. From his daily pay of $1.10, he assigned $17 each month to be sent to his mother. In March 1918, he proceeded to France, where he was assigned to the 5th Trench Mortar Battery. There, he served in the final and most intense phase of the war. In October 1918, only weeks before the Armistice, Ormond was hospitalized with Trench Fever, an illness common among troops living in the difficult conditions of the front lines. He remained under care for two months. Ormond was discharged from service in February 1919. He returned to Fullarton, where he resumed the life he had set aside, farming and contributing once again to his local community. On February 19, 1923, he married Margaret Walker. Together, they built a family and raised three sons: John, Walter, and James. Ormond Campbell MacDougald died on January 10, 1983. His life reflected the enduring values of his generation—service, responsibility, and dedication to both family and community. We Will Remember Them Ontario Command Remember Our Brave Veterans
