81 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CRESSMAN, Robert Leander Robert was born in New Dundee, Ontario on July 24, 1921, to Leander and Jessie (Oliver) along with five siblings: Margaret, Isabel, James, Allan and Marie. A schoolteacher’s prediction to his mother “don’t expect much academically from Robert” was erased by Robert himself who graduated from High School. He enlisted in 1942 with the Royal Canadian Air Force, trained and flew on multiple aircraft which included the B-24 Liberator, DC-4 North Star, B-25 Mitchell. He served overseas during World War II as a U-Boat hunter and continued his service with Canadian Command. After the war, he further erased the prediction by entering Queen’s University and obtaining his Civil Engineering degree by graduating with a grade of over 80%. He married Kay (Sutherland) and they raised two boys: Greg and Scott. Robert actually followed his brothers, James and Allen, who also served in World War II with the Air Force. He was finally discharged in 1971 with the rank of Major. He continued his civic life working as an engineer, playing golf, gardening, raising and training poodles, playing bridge, and enjoying good cuisine. Robert passed away on July 31, 1995.
