79 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CRAWFORD, Thomas C. “Ted” Ted was born on January 18, 1914 in Espanola, ON. He joined the Canadian Army on October 5, 1943 and served with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, A Company in England and Holland during World War II. Signalman Crawford was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the King George Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the France and Germany Star. Ted was killed in action on April 6, 1945 in Holland and was awarded the Medal of Remembrance posthumously for the Liberation of Holland and the Canada Medal for the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. Ted is buried in the Holten Cemetery in Holland. CRESSMAN, Allan Ezra Allan was born on October 1, 1919, in Wilmot Township, Ontario, to Leander and Jessie (Oliver) along with five siblings: Margaret, Isabel, James, Robert and Marie. He attended public school in Wilmot Township and completed his schooling in the New Dundee Continuation School. Prior to World War II, he was employed at New Dundee Creamery. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on December 6, 1941, started his training in Galt, Ontario to be a Wireless Operator and a Wireless Air Gunner. He was posted in Newfoundland. During his service, he married Velma Grace (Bauer). Allan was discharged on August 28, 1945, with the rank of Pilot Officer. He returned to his job in New Dundee, worked hard, took night school courses to achieve the First-Class Stationary Engineering papers and worked his way up to become Chief Engineer at the Creamery. Allan and Velma raised their four children: Robert, Donald, Laurel, and Terry. His spare time was filled doing active service with the Wilmot Elementary School Board, United Brethren Church, Board of Trade, Volunteer Fire Department and umpiring Minor League Softball. Allan died on January 27, 2004, and is laid to rest in the New Dundee Union Cemetery. CRESSMAN, James Oliver James was born on November 14, 1917, in Oxford County Ontario to Leander and Jessie (Oliver) along with five siblings: Margaret, Isabel, Allan, Robert and Marie Cressman. He attended Green’s School R.R. #5 onWalkers Road and New Dundee Continuation School. James married Irene Kaster on August 14, 1941, and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in May 1942. Basic training in Trenton and Manitoba along with special courses prepared James for war. His unit was preparing to go overseas but the war was winding down, so he was discharged in May 1945. He was employed at the New Dundee Creamery as the Butter Production Manager. Irene and James raised six children: Reginald, Douglas, Dale, Edythe, Jay and Joan. Jim was a community man, very involved with the Board of Trade, United Brethren Church and other committees. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in New Hamburg for 29 years. James passed away in Nithview Retirement Home on February 2, 2007, and is buried in Rosebank Cemetery on Huron Road, Waterloo County.
