73 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COWLEY, Charles H. Charles was born in Chiswick, Middlesex, England on February 2, 1872and immigrated to Canada early in the next century. He settled in Stratford, ON where he worked as a boiler maker. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on January 18, 1916. His attestations papers indicated he had previously served four years in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Charles served as a medic with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force duringWorldWar I and returned to work as a boiler maker after the war. Charles passed away in the 1950s. COX (LAFFERTY), Margaret J. Margaret was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 13, 1920. She joined the Royal Canadian Army and served during World War II. Margaret passed away on December 30, 2001. COX, Richard Frederick Richard was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on June 14, 1896. The family moved to the Brussels area when Fred was just a baby. He grew up on the farm and when he was nineteen years old, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Brussels on December 21, 1915. He was with the 161st Battalion, 7th Battalion CRT and 64th Battalion. He arrived in England on the SS Lapland on November 11, 1916. Fred was ill most of his time overseas and by April 1917, he was sent back to Canada. He sailed from Liverpool on the hospital ship Letitia and was diagnosed with tubercular lung. He returned home, was discharged on October 31, 1917, and became a farmer. He married and had a family of two children who blessed him with six grandsons. Fred passed away on December 23, 1965. He is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel.
