69 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COWELL, James Cleveland James was born in London, Ontario on August 23, 1958. Retired Warrant Officer James Cleveland Cowell joined the Canadian Forces on August 11, 1977. During his career, he served in both the Army and the Air Force. He has served in every province and territory of Canada, touching waters of all three oceans as well as the United States, Germany, Italy, and Cyprus. He served with 3 PPCLI, 3 CDO, C153-R32, HMCS Oriole, and 57 Glens. In 2011, he was deployed to Afghanistan as a subject matter expert in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD). WO Cowell retired from the Canadian Forces on August 23, 2018. He has been residing in South Glengarry since September 4, 2020, and is a three-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Claude Nunney V.C. Branch 544. COWIESON, John Harrison Born in Queensville, Ontario, on June 10, 1916, John attended Aurora Public and High Schools between 1925 and 1935. He worked as an apprentice at the Fleury Foundry and was a private in the Queens York Rangers. In March 1940, John married Lucille Martin. Enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in September 1941, John was trained as a wireless air gunner in Toronto, Guelph, Jarvis, Penfield Ridge, Yarmouth, Halifax and in Boston, Mass. before going overseas in March 1943. John was serving as W.O./Air Gunner with 226 Squadron RAF on Mitchell FV927 engaged in operation Noball on a daylight raid against German V-weapon sites inAudembert, France when FV927 was shot down by flak. All crew members lost their lives. COWIN, Eric E. Eric was born on June 8, 1920 in Cobourg, ON. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and served in the 47th Artillery Battery in England and Italy during World War II. Eric passed away on October 2, 1991.
