67 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COSBY, Lawrence E. Lawrence was born on June 25, 1913 in Wainfleet, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on July 29, 1942. He served with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, 1st Survey Regiment in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean, North Africa, and Europe during World War II. He was discharged on January 26, 1946 and was awarded the Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He married Pauline Webben on September 29, 1946 and had one son. In civilian life, he worked for the Provincial/Consumer Gas as a licensed Gas Fitter. Lawrence passed away on May 19, 1981. COTTYN, Charlie Charlie was born on a pioneer prairie farm near Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba, on December 1, 1924. He enlisted in the Navy (Reserve Force) on May 12, 1943. They needed seamen so though his form indicated “swimming – fair”, he could not swim a stroke, but quickly learned. He served on corvette boats Chippawa, Naden, Givenchy, Protector II, Stadacona, Niobe, St. Christopher, HMCS MTB-735, Peregrine, Cornwallis and York, mine-sweeping and laying smoke in Europe’s harbours until the war’s end. He was released on November 1, 1945. Although he had two brothers in the army, the topic of war was never discussed in his family. He married in 1946, and he and Bertha bought a small farm with a VLA loan, which they paid back in 1949 when they moved to Ontario. He learned the welding trade and in 1960, they moved to farm again in Reach Township with daughter Gail and handicapped son Wayne. In 1967, he and son-in-law Arnold Kerry established Utica Farm Eq which still operates today as Green Tractors Inc. with family members still involved. Charlie resided in Port Perry from 1960 until his passing in 1993 at the age of 68. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Port Perry Branch 419 for over thirty years. COUSE, Mervyn A. Mervyn was born on January 22, 1923 in Hamilton, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 31, 1942 and served with the Royal Air Force No. 12 Bomber Squadron in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Norway during World War II. He was a navigator on a Lancaster bomber flying out of Wickenby, England. In 29 flight operations, he participated in raids on some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany. He also took part in sea-mining operations near Oslo and bombing “The Eagle’s Nest” near Berchtesgaden. Mervyn was discharged on September 14, 1945 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 2000, he wrote “A tour of Operations with 12 Squadron RAF”. He graduated from the University of Toronto in Civil Engineering in 1950 and spent most of his career working for Proctor & Redfern, retiring as Senior VicePresident. He was married to Agnes for 62 years and they had four daughters. Mervyn passed away on January 10, 2010.
