61 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COLLEY, James Noel Bellasyse James was born on August 13, 1879, in Church Stretton, England, to Rev. Alfred Noel and Meliora Lee (Bellasyse) Colley. He immigrated to Canada in 1905 with his brother Thomas. He worked as a banker in Toronto before enlisting in the Army (Regular Force) on March 1, 1916 as a Lieutenant with the 220th Battalion. He married Frances Marion Temple on May 25, 1916 in Toronto. After training in Canada, he embarked for the United Kingdom on June 22, 1917 and upon arrival began service with the Canadian Forestry Corps in various districts throughout the UK. He embarked for France on June 26, 1918 and served with the CFC in France until returning to the UK on November 18, 1918. James returned to Canada in August 1919 and was discharged in Toronto on August 25, 1919. He and his wife Frances Marion raised two children, Barbara Bellasyse and James Temple Bellasyse. His career was as a Master (teacher) at Upper Canada College. James passed away on October 1, 1971 and is buried in St. James Cemetery, Toronto. COLLINS, David David was born in Ballintra, Ireland on May 21, 1890. In his early twenties, he decided to come to Canada. He purchased his ticket for the crossing, but for some fateful reason, missed the departure of his ship, the Titanic. David did come to Canada later and on October 26, 1914, joined the Army (Regular Force) with the 28th Battalion (Northwest), Canadian Expeditionary Force, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He was 24 years old and single. Private Collins sailed to England on May 29, 1915, and landed in France on September 17. He was lightly wounded later in the year and returned to duty after treatment. David served at the front through the war including the battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. Near Arras, on July 19, 1918, his unit suffered air bombardment that resulted in several casualties. David was badly wounded and had his right forearm and a finger in his left hand amputated. Unfit for service, he returned to Canada to recover from his injuries. He was discharged on February 4, 1919. David later married Margaret Ann Magee and settled in Toronto, where together they raised seven children. David passed away on November 13, 1951, at the age of 61. He is buried in York Cemetery in Toronto. COLLINS, George Benjamin Magee George was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 31, 1932, the son of David and Margaret Ann (Magee) Collins. He enlisted as a reservist with the Royal Canadian Navy on February 14, 1951. It was in honour of his father that he joined, and it was done over his mother’s strong objections. During his time with the Naval Reserve, he trained at HMCS York, HMCS Brunswicker, and sailed on HMCS Cape Breton. George was part of the Naval Field gun crew representing HMCS York. He was also part of the Royal Guard for the arrival of then Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh on their visit to Toronto on October 12, 1951. He was then discharged from the Navy on August 25, 1955. George worked virtually all his life in the stock brokerage business. He married Patricia Barry and together they raised two children. He was a lifelong member of the Naval Club of Toronto, and a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for over forty years playing an active role in the activities of Coldwater Branch 270. George passed away on May 4, 2025, at the age of 93. He is buried at Highland Memory Gardens in Toronto.
