55 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CATLING, James Robert Clarence James was born on June 11, 1918, on Cockburn Island, Lake Huron, east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Charles and Loretta Catling of Bar River, a small community east of Sault. Ste. Marie. He was married to Agnes M., and they had a child named Clarence. James was a metal worker by trade. Prior to enlisting with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada on September 21, 1942, in Borden. He was serving in the Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury Regiment. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Rifleman James Catling was killed in action during the first wave of the landings. He is buried in the Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in Normandy, France. His name is inscribed on the Echo Bay cenotaph east of Sault Ste. Marie. CHADBURN, Lloyd Vernon Lloyd was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 21, 1919. He attended Aurora High School between 1933 and 1934 and worked at the Fleury Foundry. After being rejected in the army and navy, Lloyd was accepted by the RCAF (Regular Force) as an air gunner in April 1940. Commissioned as Pilot Officer in Ottawa, Lloyd was posted to No. 112 Squadron where he made his first operational flight in March 1941. In February 1942, Chadburn was posted to No. 416 RCAF Squadron in Peterhead, Scotland. Days later, he took over command of the squadron, becoming the first graduate of the BCATP to lead a fighter command squadron. Lloyd was the youngest Squadron Leader in the RCAF at 21. First to destroy an e-boat with cannon fire, Lloyd was a prolific airman and as Wing Commander provided safe passage for the USAAF. In sixty sorties, Lloyd’s squad shot down 44 enemy aircraft without a loss earning him the nickname the Angel. Lloyd was leading a patrol in Spitfire MJ824 on June 13, 1944, when he was killed in a collision in Caen, France. CHAMBERS, William John “Bill” Bill was born on July 12, 1914, in Arden, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Middlesex & Huron Regiment, Fire Service in May 1942 and served in London and Southampton, England during World War II until his discharge in January 1945 at the rank of Leading Fireman. He was one of 500 trained Firefighters in the Fire Service. He received the War Medal 1939-1945 and Defense Medal. Bill joined the Royal Canadian Legion upon discharge from the service, initially at Branch 167 in Exeter where he served as Fire Chief from 1945 to 1956. From 1956 to 1971, he was stationed at CFB Clinton as DND Crew Fire Chief. Bill served as Secretary/Treasurer at Exeter Branch 167; President in 1967, two terms as Secretary and several Executive positions at Clinton Branch 140; Deputy Zone Commander C1 in 1968-69, and Zone Commander C1 in 1969-70. He received Life Membership at Branch 140 in September 1984 and a MSM Branch 140 in 1991. In total, he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 45 years. Bill resided in Clinton, Ontario since 1956 and passed away on April 12, 2001.
