51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAREY, Robert Robert was born on February 19, 1891, in Goderich, Ontario. His education was fulfilled with a degree from Kingston University. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 2, 1915, with the Royal Canadian Artillery and was sent to Halifax to board the ship for overseas, arriving in England on February 14, 1916. Robert was transferred to the Canadian Field Artillery, 46th Battery for training. On July 14, 1916, he embarked for France and to the front lines with the rank of Bombardier. Robert fought with his unit during the battles at the Somme, Vimy Hill 60 and Cambrai. He was awarded the Military Medal on February 19, 1917, for bravery in the field during the Battle of the Somme. He was promoted to Corporal on May 31, 1917, and to Sergeant on August 8, 1917. Robert was transferred back to the United Kingdom for a university course where he was commissioned as an Officer in 1918. After the war was over, he served in the army occupation until early 1919. Robert was discharged on August 8, 1920, with the rank of Lieutenant. He married Edrie Beatrice Puddicombe Tye. He died on July 5, 1974, and is laid to rest in St. James Anglican Cemetery in Wilmot Township. CARLYLE, George McVey George was born in Dunbar, Ontario on November 15, 1924. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) in 1940, at the age of 16, through the Dominion Provincial Wartime Emergency Training Program at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School in Cornwall, ON. During World War II, he served with distinction in the Canadian Navy aboard the destroyer HMCS St. Francis and tanker HMCS Moonbeam. Later, he worked as a radio operator in the Special Naval Communications branch. After his military service, George dedicated seventeen years to the National Research Council’s Communications Branch before transitioning to private business. In 1948, he married Elaine Burton Carlyle, his beloved wife of seventy years until her passing in 2018. In 1967, George became a part-owner of Skene Boats Ltd., later retiring as President of Skene Industries in 1983. Outside of his professional career, he was an avid birdwatcher and gardener, actively involved with the Rideau Valley Field Naturalists, Rideau Lakes Horticultural Society, and the Master Gardeners of Ontario. He has been residing in Kingston, Ontario since 2006. CARSCADDEN, Sean D. Sean was born in Ottawa, Ontario on August 30, 1972. He joined the Canadian Forces straight out of high school to attend RMC/RRMC. He graduated from RRMC with a double major in Physics and Oceanography in 1995. After nearly two years of training in Moose Jaw and Portage la Prairie, he earned his wings in the Spring of 1997. Sean had the honour of being presented his wings by his grandfather David Croskery, who was an instructor pilot for the BCATP and an anti-submarine pilot off of Newfoundland during World War II. Sean was posted to 427 Squadron at CFB Petawawa to fly the CH146 Griffon in support of the Army, where he deployed to Honduras for OP CENTRAL in 1998, and Bosnia in 1999/2000. He was posted to 403 Squadron at CFB Gagetown in 2002, where he became an instructor and standards officer. Promoted to Major, he was then posted to 1 Wing Headquarters at CFB Kingston, where he was in charge of training and standards while overseeing training for the units deploying to Afghanistan from 2008-2011. He retired from the Regular Force in 2011 and joined 400 Sqn at CFB Borden from 2011-2017 as a line pilot and standards officer. He now works as an air ambulance pilot for Ornge.
