47 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURKE, Harold Roy Harold was born on October 21, 1940, in Kent County. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) in January 1960. He was ABSG1 Able Seaman with the Signals 1st Class and served on HMCS Stadacona (Halifax) and HMCS Columbia (Halifax). He was discharged in January 1963. Harold joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1963 and was President of Merlin Branch 465. He is still active in the Legion and has been a member for 61 years. Harold is a great craftsman and is still making things to auction off to make money for the Legion. He has been residing in Tilbury, Ontario since August 2000. BURNETT, Emerson Archibald Emerson, the youngest son of Christina McMillan and William Burnett, was born on September 17, 1919, on the Southline, Priceville, Artemesia Township, Grey County, Ontario. His siblings were Wilbur, Kathleen and John. He attended Priceville Public School. His father suffered from a debilitating stroke and passed away in 1941. He enlisted on his birthday, September 17, 1942, in Toronto with the Royal Canadian Artillery and trained as Gunner. (L/BDR) in Petawawa then served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. His medals were the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. While serving in Holland, the Netherlands, he fell in love with and married Esther Rosalie Hart Harteveld on January 2, 1946. On demobilization, he was discharged on March 28, 1946 and returned home to Priceville. Rosalie was with child, ill with pneumonia and unable to travel so lived with her parents. Their daughter, Catharina (Katie) was born in the summer of ’46. Rosalie and Katie arrived in Halifax then travelled by train to Toronto Union Station in January 1947. Emerson drove them home to his farm north of Priceville. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branches 333 and 308 for a total of fifty years. Emerson passed away on November 3, 1998. BURNETT, Dr. Robert “Royden” Royden was born in 1905, he was the son of Robert Burnett and grew up in Glenelg Township, Grey County, Ontario. He enlisted in 1941 and served as a squadron leader in Canada and the British Isles until his discharge in 1945. He married Margaret MacArthur from Priceville, Ontario. He ran a medical practice in Durham and he coached the Durham Huskies hockey team. Royden passed away in 1975.
