41 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BREEN, Maurice William Maurice was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 28, 1895, to Jeremiah and Jessie Breen. Prior to World War I, he was working as a steamfitter. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 3, 1915 at Niagara Military Camp with the Canadian Mounted Rifle Regiment. His unit sailed for Great Britain on July 18, 1915, arrived at Folkstone, England, and from there to France on October 24, 1915. He transferred to the 4th Division “C” Squad. On June 2, 1916, he was listed as missing in action. His mother was notified that Maurice is presumed as killed in action during operations at Sanctuary Wood. His name is listed on the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial in Belgium. He is also commemorated on page 58 of the First World War Book of Remembrance on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. BREMNER, William Clare William was born in Ethel, Ontario on February 5, 1924. The son of a farmer, he had a passion for models, mechanics, and flying. He enlisted in London, Ontario on February 4, 1943, at the No. 9 Recruiting Centre RCAF. His training started in London and was sent to Brandon Manitoba, Souris, Winnipeg, Regina, Prince Albert, Davidson, Arnprior, St. Thomas, Aylmer, and Toronto for various parts of his training. He started training in 1943 and finished in 1945. He enlisted as AC2 Std. Aircrew and was selected for pilot. At the I.T.S. he stood 11th in a class of 95 and remustered to Flight Engineer to expedite training. He graduated as Sgt. F/E and did refresher courses for five months and was then discharged due to demobilization. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and E Badge. He attended the O.A.C. in Guelph for two years and returned to take over the farm. He married Francis Shaw in 1949, and they had a family of ten. They moved to Brussels in 1975. Bill was employed at Campbell Soup factory, and others until his retirement. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 for forty years. Bill passed away on August 4, 2004. BRENNEMAN, Erwin Daniel Erwin was born on June 2, 1924, in Punkeydoodles Corners, Waterloo County to Jack and Lavina Brenneman, along with seven siblings: Raymond, Marcella, Lavern C., David, Katie, Lucie L. and Herb. The call to arms prompted Erwin to enlist in World War II, signed up in the Army (Regular Force) on January 20, 1944, with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. After basic training, he was immediately shipped overseas to England and attached to the Fourth Division. Erwin and his unit were involved in the Hochwald Gab to drive the Germans out of Holland and into Germany. In constant bombardment from tank battles, he received a severe injury to his right hip and was sent back to England where he spent the rest of the war in a body cast. He was shipped back to Canada and discharged in September 1945. Erwin married Nora (Lowrie), and they raised four children: Pat, Betty, Dan, and Lorrie. He was a truck driver by trade, eventually becoming the owner/operator of E. Brenneman Fuels, also became the Rural Mail Carrier. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 in 1970 where he became President in 1995 and was a member for 29 years. Erwin died on August 16, 1999, and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, N.H.
