413 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND I still remember that day, When he let go of my hand; I begged for him to stay But he went to protect our land. I remember I held my daughter close But she strained against my arms; I know she wanted to go And protect him from all harm. I remember her dainty and small My exuberant little child, But now she stands up tall And very seldom smiles. They were all very strong But joy did they lack, They marched two by two Some at front, some at back. They arrived on the battlefield Then the war had begun None of them would yield Until it was all done. Only then was he shot, But he was very grave. Of himself he thought not But of the people he did save. He said goodbye to the ones he loved, To his daughter and his wife Then the Lord God from up above Took him and his life. All that was left was a poppy seed Up, up did it grow And it stood there for all to heed, It could live without a foe. I Will Always Remember Him
