399 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND I Stood At The Cenotaph November 11th, Remembrance Day. I stood at the cenotaph, surrounded by veterans, families, and students. The cold wind blew, but our hearts were warmer, filled with gratitude and respect. As I gazed at the veterans, I saw the weight of memories in their eyes. Their stories, etched on their faces, spoke of bravery, sacrifice, and resilience. My grandfather, a WWII veteran, shared tales of friendship, fear, and loss. His experiences taught me the value of freedom and the importance of remembering. The Last Post echoed through the streets, its haunting melody signalling the start of the twominute silence. I closed my eyes, reflecting on the significance of this moment. The stillness was a tearful reminder of the lives lost, the families torn apart, and the communities shattered. We gathered to honour the brave men and women who fought for our freedom, democracy, and peace. Their selflessness and courage in the face of difficulties inspired me to appreciate the life I have. I thought of the soldiers' families, waiting anxiously for letters, the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire, and the children orphaned by war. The wreaths laid before us symbolized respect, gratitude, and hope. Hope that future generations will learn from the past and strive for a world where conflicts are resolved peacefully. We must remember the past but also look towards the future, working together to create a harmonious world. As I scanned the crowd, I saw people from diverse backgrounds, united in their respect. Remembrance Day transcends borders, cultures, and generations. It reminds us that our freedom is not free, but paid for with the blood, sweat, and tears of others. The ceremony concluded with a final farewell, but the impact lingered. I felt proud to be part of this tradition, humbled by the courage of those who served. I vowed to share their stories, ensuring their legacy lives on. We will remember. In the following days, I plan to learn more about Canada's military history, to honor the sacrifices made. I will share the stories of veterans with my peers, keeping their memories alive. By remembering, we ensure that their bravery and selflessness are never forgotten. As I walked away from the cenotaph, the poppy on my shirt reminded me that we must strive for peace, just as those who fought for our freedom did. On Remembrance Day, we come together to honour the past and build a brighter future. By remembering, we find strength in unity and purpose in preserving peace.
