363 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TYE, William Daniel William was born on June 3, 1913, in Milverton, Ontario, to Percival and Edna (Beckett) Tye. He attended public and high school in Milverton and received his degree at Western University in London, Ontario. He enlisted in London, ON in 1939 with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force). Training took place in Belleville and St. Johns, Quebec. He received his wings at Fingal as an observer and then went to Rivers, Manitoba and Charlottetown, PEI for Reconnaissance Training. On arrival to England, he was transferred to the Royal Air Force and spent three years with Coastal Command patrolling the English Channel. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Flying Officer. He was employed at Ratz and Bechtel for a time, then in 1954 he opened his own Home Hardware store in Dundalk. He was a valued member of Town Council, Past President and 25-year member of Dundalk Legion Branch 285, Charter Member of Lions Club, Chairman of committee for the building of Medical Centre. William married Ruth Irene Kropf, and they raised two boys, William and Peter. William died in 1974 and is laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in Milverton, ON. VASSAIR, John Charles John was born in Penetanguishene, Ontario on August 25, 1931. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on May 14, 1951. He was transferred from RCASC to RC Sigs with the rank of Corporal in June 1953 and was posted to 25 CIB Sigs Tp in Korea May 1954. He passed Jump Course, was awarded the Canadian Para Badge in March 1957 and was posted to 56 Canadian Sig Squadron in Rafah, Egypt in October 1957. He was posted to UNEF HQ Gaza, Palestine in May 1960 and posted to NORAD Region, Kansas City, Missouri, USA in June 1962. He was posted to NATO NORTHAG Sig Tp Riendahlen, Germany in August 1966. John was released from the Canadian Army on March 21, 1971. For his service, he received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal Korea, SSM-NATO, Peacekeeping Medal, UN Medal Korea, UNEF Medal, Canadian Forces Decoration, Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in October 2002, Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in October 2012 and Ambassador for Peace Medal from the Government of Korea. John has been residing in Toronto, Ontario since March 1971 and is a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258. VERSTEEG, Anne Marie Anne was born in Kitchener, Ontario on October 14, 1960. She enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regular) as an Air Frame Technician on April 24, 1978. After training, she went to CFB Bagotville, Quebec on December 7, 1978, working on CF101 Voodoos fighter jets. Moving to Edmonton, Alberta in 1981 required learning C130 Hercules transport aircraft which gave opportunities for exercises in Thule, Greenland. In May 1987, Anne did an Occupational Transfer to Finance Clerk and after training was posted to CFB Ottawa. Ottawa highlights include six months as the JR Mess PMC and six months tour to Alert, NWT. Other postings included CFS Debert, CFB Edmonton, as Telecom Invoice Supr moved to 74 Comm GP HQ from Vancouver, BC to Edmonton, AB. In 1997, the Prairie Regional Accounting stood up, which later became Western Region Accounting Office. A posting to CFSU (E) Ramstein, Germany in 2000 felt like a reward. That is where she met her husband Steve Krueger, a sailor, and was privileged to participate in the Nijmegen March on a NATO team. After her release on November 26, 2003, she moved near CFSU (E) Geilenkirchen, Germany where her husband was posted. Between November 2007-2010, Reserve Class B contracts at HMCS Prevost and HMCS Hunter came her way. She is a six-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Last Post Branch 410.
