359 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TOMS, Charles Charles Toms was born on September 24, 1891, in Newcastle, Ontario, to William and Mary Elizabeth (Hemmings) Toms. Charles listed his occupation as Druggist when he attested in the Army (Regular Force) under MSA on May 9, 1918 in Toronto. He served in the CanadianArmy Dental Corp in the Toronto area (Military District #2), utilizing his skills as a druggist, and was discharged on November 30, 1918 in Toronto. After his discharge, he attended the University of Toronto Pharmacy School and graduated in 1921. Shortly thereafter on May 19, 1922, he married Florence Lilian Pickering in Toronto. Residing at 59a Humewood Drive in Toronto they had four children: Robert Grayson, Gordon C., Mary Margaret and Donald Bruce. Tragically, Mary Margaret died at three years old from acute appendicitis on April 9, 1934 at St. John’s Hospital in Toronto. Charles died in Aurora in 1981. TORRIE, Duncan James Duncan was born inWalter’s Falls, Ontario on December 8, 1912, to Duncan and Sarah (McLeod) Torrie along with seven siblings. He received his education from grade 1 to 13 in Markdale. At the call for arms, Duncan, even though he was married and had a six-week-old baby, enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 15, 1942 with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Corps. Duncan served in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. His service ended in Appeldoorn, Holland; he loved the Dutch people. The troops slept in barns which he claimed were cleaner than most homes. He received five medals, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Great Britain War Medal, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and 1939-1945 Victory Medal. They shipped him back to Canada and he was discharged on December 8, 1945. He married Ruby (Allison) and they raised four children, Anne, Jack, Doris and Douglas. Duncan joined in with the boys of New Hamburg to get a Royal Canadian Legion in New Hamburg. They were successful, receiving the charter in January 1952. He served his legion for 44 years, from the first meeting until his death on January 6, 1996. Duncan is buried in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. TOTH, Frank Frank was born in Hungary, on April 2, 1922. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1941 and served with the 19th Field in France until his release in 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for over 25 years. Frank resided in Acton, Ontario from 1926 until his death on February 8, 1984.
