351 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STURROCK, William Marvin William was born in 1924 in Priceville, Ontario, in Grey County. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 14th Canadian Hussars RCAC, 8th Reconnaissance in 1942. During the war, Marvin was held prisoner of war but was killed in action on November 9, 1944. He was buried with honour at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. “There is a link death cannot sever, love and remembrance last forever.” SULLIVAN, Herbert Hartwell Herbert was born in Flesherton, Ontario on February 8, 1894. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 20, 1918 in Hamilton at the age of 26. He joined the 1st Battalion and the 2nd C.O.R. Following his training, he was sent to the No. 2 District Depot and was taken on strength to the Embarkation Casualty Section in August 1918. He was in Halifax and contacted Smallpox at Station Hospital. He returned to the #2 District Depot in November and was discharged on April 12, 1919. After his discharge, he went to Montreal. Herbert worked for the Standard Bank of Canada and after returning to Mid Western, Ontario, he met and married his wife Valieria. He continued working in banking with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Harriston, Mount Hope, others and Brussels. The couple raised four children. He died on March 20, 1964 in a London Hospital and is buried in Brussels Cemetery. SUTTON, Alfred Charles Alfred was born on September 28, 1912, in Toronto, Ontario. He spent ten years with the Lorne Scots Militia before enlisting in Brampton on June 18, 1940. He joined the 1st Royal Canadian Corps of Signals as a Signalman. He travelled to England on the RMS Sythiain a convoy of ships ladened with explosives. He trained a detachment of five men in military skills from first aid to hand-to-hand combat. He served in England, Sicily, Palermo, Italy, Ravena, and provided signal support for the battles of Ortona, Monte Casino, Pescara and many others. He joined the 1st Canadian Corp in the Netherlands. He was overseas for the entire war and was never severely injured. He was discharged on August 14, 1945. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Efficiency Medal and Clasp. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1945 and was a member until his death on November 11, 2005. He became a Life Member in 1986 with Brussels Branch 218. He loved music and played the piano for World War I veterans at Bing Hall in Brampton and special events in Brussels. He and his wife moved to the Brussels area in 1973.
