33 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BERRY, George Frederick George was born in Preston, Ontario on April 13, 1930, to Frederick Warner and Ruth Catherine Berry along with one brother Ingles and one sister Catherine. George married Arlie Pearson and they raised four children; Carole, Susan, Sandralee and Anne. He enlisted with the Regular Army on November 14, 1951 with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Corps (RCEMC). He received basic training in London and Camp Borden, then was posted to take the Gun Mechanic course where he successfully passed to become a Gun Mechanic (craftsman). He was transferred to the United Nations Peace Mission and shipped to Korea where he served as a Paratrooper, returned to Canada, presented with the Korea Medal and the UN Service Medal. He was discharged from Wolseley Barracks, London on November 18, 1954. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Guelph Branch 234 where he was a 44-year member and enjoyed many years of comradeship while being very active in the Legion with three terms as President. He remarried (Millie Rogers) and they enjoyed 47 years at their “Summer Home” at Mooretown Campground. George passed away on January 24, 2018 in his 88th year. He is buried in Woodlawn Memory Park, Guelph, Ontario. BEST, Ernest Charles Ernest was born in Windsor, Ontario on June 29, 1926. In 1943, Ernest joined the Canadian Army (Regular Force) at the age of seventeen. His basic training was at Ipperwash, Ontario. He was deployed to London, England where he served during the Blitz. After his release in 1945, he returned to Windsor where he went to work at a steel factory. After that, Ernest went to work for the Hiram Walker Company. One of Ernest’s favourite sports was boxing. He coached boxing at Walkersville Collegiate in Windsor. He and his wife raised six children together. Ernest passed away on January 3, 2007. He was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255. BEST, Gary Leo Gary was born in Windsor, Ontario on November 21, 1950. He joined the Army (Reserve Force) with the Windsor Regiment on June 8, 1967, at the age of seventeen. His basic training was in Windsor and Petawawa, Ontario and then on to Cedar Springs. He was stationed in Windsor and served for two years. After his release on January 16, 1969, Gary went to work doing different jobs until 1973 when he started working for the Post Office. Gary retired in 2007. Today, Gary helps out as a Care Giver and does odd jobs to keep busy. He also enjoys the outdoors spending time on his boat and fishing. Gary is also a proud nine-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255.
