337 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SEMPLE, David Bradley David was born on March 18, 1925, in Quebec City, Quebec. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on March 16, 1943, serving in World War II with the Royal Rifles of Canada in the clerical trade until discharged on April 16, 1946. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. David served in the Reserves from September 24, 1948 to March 23, 1952 and immediately transferred into the Regular Force (Canadian Army) on March 24, 1952 as a clerk. While serving with the 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade, he was deployed to West Germany from November 1953 to December 1955. During the next seven years after returning to Canada, he served in the East Quebec area as a recruiter, and as personnel selection at FMCHQ Quebec. David was eventually transferred to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa in April 1962. In 1967, he was involved in the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces study at the Stanford Research Institute in Santa Barbara, California. After his years of dedicated service, David was discharged on April 26, 1973 at the rank of Master Warrant Officer. He was a recipient of the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. David passed away on February 23, 1980, at the age of 54. SHIELS, Melvin Robert Melvin was born in Grey Township, Huron County, Ontario, on January 8, 1897. He enlisted with the 161st Battalion Canadian Infantry Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Brussels, Ontario on December 24, 1915. He trained in London and was shipped overseas on the SS Laplan in November 1916. Upon arrival, he was hospitalized with the mumps. He was taken on strength by the 4th Res. Battalion and then joined the 47th Battalion in March. In September 1918, he was wounded in the field with a gunshot wound in the left leg. After recovery, he was posted with the Western Ontario Regiment Division at Whitley. He was awarded the Silver Maple Leaf Pin with the 161st Battalion, engraved plus two other medals. They have been donated to The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 by his daughter. Private Shiels returned to Canada on the Empress of Britain in January 1919 and was discharged due to demobilization on February 14, 1919. Melvin married a Brussels girl and they moved to Detroit, Michigan for work. He passed away on March 13, 1958, at the age of 61, and is buried in Detroit. SHILLINGFORD, Marlene Ann Marie Marlene was born in Newmarket, Ontario on May 2, 1968. She enrolled in the CanadianArmed Forces on October 1, 1986, in Toronto as an Airframe Technician. She received her basic training in Cornwallis, NS and attended basic occupational training (QL3) at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering in Borden. CWO Shillingford started her career on the CT-114 Tutor at CFB Moose Jaw in July 1987. In 1995, she was posted to 8 AMS at 8 Wing Trenton. After a promotion to MCpl in 2001, she deployed to Southwest Asia on Op APOLLO, Roto 1 in 2002. Promoted to Sgt in 2005, she was selected to the Air Command Academy in Borden. In 2008, she was promoted to WO and posted overseas to Geilenkirchen, Germany with the Canadian Contingent at the NATO Airborne Early Warning & Control Force. She was deployed to Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan as the E-3A Component Detachment Chief. In December 2012, she was promoted to MWO and posted to Asticou in Gatineau, QC then posted to the Canadian Forces Warfare Centre in Shirley’s Bay, Ottawa. She was promoted to CWO in June 2017 and posted to 12 Wing Shearwater as the 12 AMS SCWO. In March 2019, she was appointed as WCWO at 15Wing Moose Jaw and in June 2021 she was appointed as the Division CWO for 1 Canadian Air Division.
