335 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SCHARLACH, Jerome Jerome was born on January 11, 1923, to Oscar (World War I Veteran) and Edith. He grew up in Kitchener with siblings, Audrey and Marg. Jerome was with the Perth Regiment as a Private with the Able Co. from June 1, 1943, until his discharge on July 28, 1945, where he proudly served in the United Kingdom, Italy and Netherlands. Jerome was wounded in Italy in January 1945 and then again in Driel, Holland on April 3, 1945. After the war, Jerome married Olive (McAvoy) and the couple had three children, James, Michael and William. During his working years, Jerome was employed at Carling and Labatts Breweries in Waterloo. He enjoyed softball, hockey, fishing and swimming and was involved with Waterloo Minor Baseball – Junior Expos and the Senior Waterloo Tigers for many years. Jerome was a long-standing member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch, and his wife Olive was a long-standing member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Jerome passed away on April 11, 1988, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Waterloo. His name has been memorialized on Plaque #3 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. SCHMIDT, Edgar Manfred “Ed” Ed was born in Chilliwack, BC on April 22, 1944, and from his hometown of Agassiz, BC, he joined the RCAF on February 14, 1964. After basic training in St. Jean, Quebec and trades training at RCAF Station Clinton, Ontario and Camp Borden, Ontario, he was posted to RCAF Stn. Trenton BAMEO as an Instrument Technician Air. Subsequent postings included 5AMU Lahr, Germany (twice), CFB Edmonton BAMEO, 1 CAG Maintenance Squadron; Baden-Soellingen Germany; CFB Trenton BAMEO and ATTESS Trenton where he retired as a MWO AVS TECH. Ed was also active in various volunteer bands within the CF and played tenor and base drum in the RCAF Trenton and CFB Lahr Pipes and Drums and base drum and percussion in the Bade Rube Band for many years. He was released on March 30, 1996. After retirement, he went on the road and delivered heavy vehicles from factory to user in the USA and Canada, and really retired in 2019. Ed and his wife Donna have two children and three grandchildren and reside in Frankford, Ontario from where they spend their summers at their cottage on Shabomeka Lake. Ed is a 35-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Trenton Branch 110. SEES, Vivian Winnifred Vivian was born on September 18, 1923, in Port Elgin, Ontario. She enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on April 26, 1943. She served as a Filter Centre Operator. She completed her basic training at Rockcliffe Air Base near Ottawa and Trades Training at Rockcliffe, Ontario. Vivian served most of her career in Victoria, BC, except a short stint in Prince Rupert, BC. Her service in Special Duty Area was in Radar Central Control Command in Victoria, BC, which monitored all air traffic and report to a central location who would then plot the aircraft on a large tabletop map. The work was of a highly secretive nature. At the end of the war, Vivian was discharged in 1946 in Vancouver and returned to Port Elgin. Shortly after she moved to London where she attended Military Business College for employment in the transportation industry. Vivian still resides in London, Ontario. She has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Victory Branch for 79 years.
