333 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SARRE, George de Carteret George was born on January 10, 1917, in Montreal, Quebec to Wilfred H. and Elizabeth J. (Murphy) Sarre along with three siblings, Wilfred R., Grace Rochelle and Elizabeth Ethel. George enlisted in Hamilton with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on July 2, 1940. Lieutenant Sarre became a flight instructor for the British Commonwealth Air Training Base #15 in Claresholm, Southwest Alberta for the duration of World War II. His instructions were received by Canadians, Americans and British teaching them to flyAnson, Yale, Harvard and Moth. Flight Lieutenant Sarre was discharged on October 11, 1946, and presented with the King’s Commendation for valuable services in the air. George was first married to Florence Knell and then Alice Humphrey. He raised six children: Beverly, Barbara, George, Florence, Wilfred and stepson John. He was employed at Kaye Motors on King St. in Kitchener where he became the sales manager. As a hobby, he would be playing golf at Westmount Country Club in Kitchener. He was an eight-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion in New Hamburg. George died on April 22, 1968, and is laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener. His name is commemorated on the Legions Veterans Memorial Wall and remembered by his children. SAUVÉ, Claude Ross Claude was born in Matchedash Township, Ontario on January 12, 1939, the son of Charles and Georgina Sauvé. By the 1950s, he lived in Fesserton, near the village of Coldwater, Ontario. Claude enrolled with the Canadian Army on April 6, 1956, assigned to the Royal Canadian Regiment through the sixties and seventies, including two tours with NATO in Germany from 1965 to 1969 and 1971 to 1975, and a six-month peacekeeping tour under United Nations in Cyprus. He was also deployed in Quebec for six months in 1970 under the War Measures Act. Claude was released from the Canadian Armed Forces on June 21, 1980. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coldwater Branch 270. Claude passed away on October 25, 2023, and is buried in Waubaushene, Ontario. SCHAEFER, Walter John Walter was born in New Hamburg, Ontario on July 2, 1913, to Charles William and Emma E. Ruthig along with four siblings, Grace (Klassen), Delores (Klassen), Marie, and Lorne Alfred Schaefer. Prior to World War II, Walter was working in Stratford. In 1941, Walter enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) and trained to be a navigator. His dedicated work ethic shows as he was a sergeant when he was discharged in 1945. His schooling helped him get a job as an accountant, employed at Public Utilities Commission in Kitchener. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50 for five years. Walter was in the Toronto General Hospital when he passed away on May 6, 1952, at the age of 38. He has been laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg.
