327 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROULTY, James Earl James was born on November 15, 1924, in Bright, Ontario to Guy Everett and Mary Gladys (Cook) Roulty along with one brother, William, and one sister, Margaret (Graham) Roulty. James attended public school in Bright and enjoyed playing hockey, baseball and lacrosse. Prior to World War II, he was working at Canadian National Railway. He enlisted on January 14, 1944, with the Artillery Corps and trained in Nova Scotia at A23 Training Centre, C.A. His unit was shipped to England and then to France. After victory was declared, James was sent into Germany as a member of our Occupation Force. When he got back to Canada, he was discharged on June 21, 1946, and returned to his job at CNR. He married Audrey E. (Matheson) and they raised one son, Robert. James joined The Royal Canadian Legion Tavistock Branch 518 in 1951, served a term as President. A member and Master of Plattsville Lodge #178. He was offered a Managers job at Elliot Motors in Woodstock, after considerable though, he accepted. James died on January 3, 1978, at the young age of 49. He has been laid to rest in North Embro Cemetery in Embro. ROUTLY, William Samuel William was born on November 4, 1922, in Bright, Ontario to Guy Everett and Gladys Routly along with two siblings, James and Margaret. He enlisted on March 4, 1941, with the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained in Toronto, Guelph, Belleville. He suffered from air sickness and took a discharge on April 15, 1942. William enlisted with the Oxford Rifles on April 21, 1942, in Kitchener and was sent to Prince George, BC for training. He was then posted to Debert, NS and overseas in February 1943. He was hospitalized for jaundice and when released was posted to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and onto Sicily and Italy for the invasion. William was injured in the kneecap and rejoined his unit that was attacking the Hitler Line. He was caught in in a bomb blast resulting with many months in hospitals with great damage to his right lung, right leg, and the loss of his right eye. He was discharged on September 4, 1945. He married Lucille Ann McKay in 1946, and they had one son, Ronald. William joined The Royal Canadian Legion Tavistock Branch in 1966 and transferred to New Hamburg for a total of 42 years of service. William died on January 19, 2008, and is buried in Chesterfield Cemetery in Ontario. ROWLANDS, John Sherlock John was born Burwash, Ontario on October 3, 1945. In 1961, he joined the Army Reserves 58th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment in Sudbury. In 1963, the family moved to Brantford where he enlisted in the Regular Forces, sent on to Armor Corps school in Camp Borden. In March 1964, he was assigned to the Royal Canadian Dragoons stationed at Gagetown, New Brunswick. Between October 1965 and April 1966, his unit was part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. Their mission was to prevent a recurrence of the fighting between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots. They contributed to the maintenance and restoration of Law and Order and facilitated a return to normal conditions. John demobilized to civilian life in September 1966. He returned to Brantford where he met and married Joan Steed. They raised three girls. He worked at different jobs, eventually finding employment as a Correctional Officer at the Burtch Correctional Centre in 1971. In 1978, he moved to Bowmansville transferring to the Whitby Jail. In 1991, he transferred to the Ontario Provincial Bailiffs, retiring from this position in 1998. He is a twenty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bowmanville Branch 178.
