325 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROGERS, Douglas Arthur Douglas was born in Trenton, Ontario on September 17, 1910. He enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) on October 30, 1940 and served in Canada, England, Scotland, Isle of Lewis and India. He received an honourable discharge on October 1, 1945 at the rank of Warrant Officer, Class 1. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for over thirty years. Douglas passed away on April 8, 1992. ROSE, Mishel “Mel” Mishel was born on January 22, 1921, in Port Robinson, Ontario. He joined the RCAF (Regular Force) on June 16, 1942, and began Air Training on February 24, 1943. He was qualified Airbomber (Navigator) on May 5, 1944, in Portage la Prairie, MB. He was assigned to 356 Squadron which was a part of the Strategic Air Force – Eastern Command. Mishel trained in B-25 Mitchells and B-24 Liberators, but his combat missions were all in Liberators. In the rank of Flying Officer, logbooks describe his role as a BombAimer. His squadron operated out of Salbonie, India and later the Cocos Islands. Mishel took part in bombing missions over Bangkok, the capital of Siam, the Burma cities of Mandalay, Rangoon, and Ramree Island. Bombing missions also included bridges of the Bangkok Moulmein Railway that traversed the River Kwai which featured in the 1957 film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. For his service, Mishel was awarded the Burma Star, 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp, Air Bomber’s Badge and the Operational Wing. He was discharged on February 21, 1946. He was a 20-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 in St. Catharines, ON. Mishel passed away on February 17, 1968. ROSE, William Robert “Bill” Bill was born inYork County Hospital in Toronto, Ontario on December 25, 1933. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on January 15, 1951. He was training as an aeroengine mechanic stationed in Trenton, Ontario. Bill was then posted to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in February 1953. He attained the rank of Corporal. Bill was discharged in January 1956 and moved to Saskatoon where he worked in the Potash Mines until November 1959 when the mine closed. He then moved to Ontario where he took up farming. In 1967, he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 in Bowmanville and was a member for 59 years holding positions as 2nd Vice, 1st Vice and President. Bill was past president of the Bowmanville District Navy League. Bill had five children: Terry, Kathy, Cheryl, Karen and Kevin. Bill currently resides in Oshawa, Ontario with his daughter Kathy and is in his 92nd year.
