323 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND REYNOLDS, Robert Henry Robert was born in Kent, England on July 4, 1877. Prior to World War I, he was a threeyear Militia member of 33rd Huron Regiment, married to Ann Margaret (Kerr) and was working as a labourer when, at the age of 38, he enlisted to serve inWorldWar I in Goderich on January 29, 1916 with the 161st Battalion. After months of training, he was sent to England arriving in Liverpool on November 11, 1916. He transferred to the 47th Battalion and on to the battlefields and was granted a Good Conduct Badge on January 29, 1918. Robert was wounded on the right forearm on September 28, 1918 shattering the bone and was sent to the #2 Canadian General Hospital “Le Treport”. The Medical Board determined that, with only 50% use of the arm, Robert would be granted a medical discharge. He was shipped back to Canada and discharged in London, Ontario on May 27, 1919. Robert and Ann raised three children, Robert Maitland, Delphena May (Ford) and John Harland. Ann died in 1945. After the war, he worked for Sheldon’s Engineering Ltd. and then the Department of Highways. He was a 25-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Galt Branch 121. Robert died at the South Waterloo Hospital on March 30, 1967 and is laid to rest in Mountview Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario. RIEHL, Donald Arthur “Don” Don was born on May 27, 1923, in New Hamburg, Ontario to Lorne and Fannie along with two siblings, Walter and Ruth E. (Donegan). He attended public school and high school in New Hamburg. Don enlisted at the age of eighteen on November 16, 1941, with the Royal Canadian Navy (Regular Force), starting his basic training aboard the HMCS York as a seaman and then the HMCS Cornwallis where he became a Stoker 1st Class. He sailed the high seas aboard the HMCS Cornwallis, Hamilton, Peregrine, Stadacona, and back to HMCS Peregrine and then HMCS York where he received the rank of Stoker Petty Officer. He was discharged on September 17, 1945. Don married Phyllis M. (Saunders) and they raised two daughters, Carolyn R. (Yantzi) and Susan L. (Brenner). Don was instrumental in starting the New Hamburg Legion in 1951, therefore becoming a founding/charter member. He operated his own construction business, remained an active member of the Legion for 52 years, owned racing horses, did some travelling, and played cribbage with his children and grandchildren. Donald died on August 5, 2003, and was laid to rest in the Shiloh Cemetery in Sullivan Township. His name is inscribed on the Veterans Plaque in the New Hamburg Legion. ROE, Charles Stuart Charles was born in Mt. Dennis, Toronto, Ontario on September 13, 1920. He enlisted in Toronto and then went to Brampton and was assigned to X-4 Rifle Instruction Battalion Liri Valley, Ponteervo near Monte Casino. Charles was in the Netherlands in 1945 – first step to return to Canada. Charles was married to Nuala with son Noel and daughters Nuala and Sandra. Charles was a truck driver before the war and after the war, he became a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force. After a stint in the police force, he became the top salesperson for Liquid Flame Oil Company. He then started his own furniture store in New Toronto and his own Industrial Custodian Company – CSR Building MTCE. He received war medals from Canada, France and was also in Germany. Charles passed away on August 9, 1982.
