299 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MINION, Harvey Lorne Harvey was born on December 8, 1894, in Derby, Grey County, Ontario. His next of kin is listed as James W. and Mary J. Minion of Owen Sound, Ontario. It appears that he moved to be employed as a teacher in Laird Township east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 227th Battalion “Men O the North” and was later transferred to the 54th Battalion CEF. On November 14, 1917, at the age of 22, L Cpl. Harvey Minion was killed in action in the trenches of Passchendaele, Belgium. His body was never recovered therefore his name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium. His name is also inscribed on the Port Findlay Cemetery, east of Sault Ste. Marie and in the Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound, Ontario. A card was placed in his memory at his name at the Menin Gate Memorial in 2017. MITCHELL, William Ernest William was born in Belfast, Ireland on June 15, 1894, and moved to St. Thomas, Ontario in 1916. He signed up in the Army (Regular Force) on January 26, 1916, in St. Thomas with the Elgin Regiment. He was then shipped overseas to England before heading to the front in France. William was transferred to the 75th Battalion. The 75th Battalion disembarked in France on August 12, 1916, where it fought as part of the 11th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division in France and Flanders until the end of the war. He was wounded, spent time in hospital in England, and returned to his unit in France. William fought in some of the major battles of the war including battles of St. Eloi, the Somme, Arras, Vimy Hill, and Passchendaele. He received the British War Medal and Victory Medal. After his discharge on March 4, 1919, he took employment with the Ford Motor Company in Windsor and then moved to St. Thomas. William was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 41 in St. Thomas. MODROWSKI (DUNCAN) (DRAYTON), Edith May Edith was born on May 13, 1934, in Toronto, Ontario, to George and Connie Duncan, along with four siblings: Ross, Connie, Ken, and Evelyn. Edith received most of her education in the Toronto area and finished with grade ten at the Orangeville High School. On December 18, 1952, Edith enlisted with the Royal CanadianAir Force (Regular) where she became anAirwoman First Class, Medical Assistant, Group One. On March 9, 1954, she was honourably released and entered civilian life. An item of special things she did after her service was noted as raising five children, Ross, Judy, Brenda, Eddie, and Brian. She also enjoyed travel, horseshoes and dancing the polka with her husband Edward Modrowski for 58 years. She loved working with the kitchen staff at the University of Waterloo, “village 2”. Edith and Edward were members of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Unfortunately, Edith passed away on May 15, 2023 and her remains are interred at Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo. Edith’s name has been inscribed on plaque #9 of the Waterloo Legions Veterans Wall of Remembrance.
