297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MEAD, William Thomas “Bill” Bill was born in Kitchener, Ontario on December 28, 1923, toWilliam and Matilda (Webb). He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals on September 4, 1942, at the age of eighteen and served throughout Europe during World War II, achieving the rank of Captain. After D-Day, Bill was sent to Normandy and posted to the 12 Canadian Line Section of the First Canadian Army Signals. In August 1944, Bill was transferred to Holland where he was discharged on March 15, 1946. Bill married Vera (Roberts) and had three daughters: Patricia, JoAnne, and Barbara. Bill worked as a chartered accountant and joined The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch in 1977 and was a member for eighteen years. He was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church, New Hamburg and the Royal Canadian Military Institute, Toronto. Bill and daughter JoAnne made three military pilgrimages to the Netherlands (1990, 1995) and England/France (1994) where Bill had the profound joy of experiencing the gratitude of the Dutch and French people. During his 1994 pilgrimage to France, the French government honoured Bill with a medal for his service in Normandy. Bill passed away on November 22, 1995, and is buried at St. James Anglican Church Cemetery, Wilmot Township. MERNER, Ross Edward Ross was born on October 5, 1915, in Copetown, Wentworth County, to Rev. Henry and Clara Melinda (Schmidt) Merner. Ross had one brother, Carl, and two sisters, Anna (Pain) and Ruth (MacLachlan) Merner. The call for arms prompted seventeenyear-old Ross to enlist in the Army (Regular Force) on June 23, 1942, with the Scots Fusiliers in Galt. Basic training started at Galt Armouries and then moved to Camp Borden where he was recommended to attend Officers Training Course at A-29 C.I.T.C. Camp Ipperwash (School of Instruction) to which on April 19, 1943, he became Lieutenant (Infantry Rifle) (C.A.A.) on April 19, 1943. He was struck off strength, discharged on November 10, 1945, with the rank of Captain. He married Nathalene (Smith) and they raised two children: Paul and Shirley (Gingerich) Merner. Ross was President of Hamburg Felt Boot Co. and Office Manager of Klassen Bronze Ltd. He was active in his community as former New Hamburg Councillor, Member of the School Board, Past President of the Board of Trade, Past Master of the New Dominion Mazonic Lodge, twenty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532. Ross died on January 22, 1973, and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery N.H. MILLER, Lloyd Bruce Lloyd was born in Brantford, Ontario on February 9, 1914. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) onAugust 21, 1942, and served with the Royal CanadianArtillery, 14th Battery, 4th Canadian Field Regiment in Northern Europe during World War II. He was released on December 11, 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 543 in Brantford for 52 years. Lloyd passed away on April 16, 1998.
