289 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McKEOWN, James A. James was born in Guelph, Ontario on April 11, 1952. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in June 1969 and served with the RCEME in Germany until his release in June 1981. James has been residing in Penetanguishene since August 2018. McKERSIE, Chester Chester was born on March 6, 1920, in Ophir, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in October 1935 and served with the Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury Regiment in France and Germany during World War II. He was discharged in October 1966. His awards include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bruce Mines Branch 211 for 51 years and was awarded his Life Membership there. Chester passed away on October 5, 1999. McKINNEY, Thomas Leslie Thomas was born in Morris Township, Huron County, Ontario on February 8, 1898. He lived near Bluevale and was a farmer. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Wingham on April 8, 1916. He joined the 161st Battalion, CEF. He went overseas on the SS Lapland on November 1, 1916, and arrived in England on November 11. He was transferred to the 58th Battalion and was sent to France. He was in the trenches for ten months until he made the extreme sacrifice and was killed in action on August 23, 1917. He was nineteen years old. A letter sent to his parents by his commanding officer relayed his sympathy and that Private McKinney was killed instantly by a shell. “He was well esteemed among the men and was always willing to do his duty for his country.” His family received the Memorial Cross.
