27 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BAILEY, Clinton Martin Clinton, the son of George and Cora Bailey, was born on January 12, 1898, in Newmarket, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the C.E.F. on January 6, 1916, in Toronto. Initially he was posted as a guard at the Kapuskasing internment camp in Northern Ontario. Clinton served with the 124th and 242nd Battalions both of which were Forestry Battalions. On September 28, 1916, he was taken on strength with the 242nd Battalion and by November 23 arrived at Halifax for overseas service. Aboard the RMS Mauretania he arrived in England on November 30. Stationed at Aldershot and Whitley camps for further training, he arrived in France on January 21, 1917. On February 26, he was with the Forestry Corps, 21st Company providing the needed lumber supporting the troops at the front. In April 1918, Clinton as a log setter was drawing a per diem of $1.75. In October, Clinton was awarded the Good Conduct Badge and in December 14 days leave in Paris. Pte. Clinton Bailey returned to Canada on the SS Regina in March 1919 and was discharged in Toronto on April 2, 1919. Clinton resided in Toronto from 1916 until his death on October 20, 1977. BANKS, Lewis M. Lewis was born in Perth, Scotland, on August 11, 1921. He joined the RAF DONR at the age of 20. Lewis was trained with the Royal Horse Guards in England. He became a dispatch rider and rode a motorcycle, delivering messages and orders to other posts. He served in India at Lord Mountbatten’s office. He also served in Burma and returned home in 1946. After the war, Lewis taught territorial how to drive jeeps and trucks. During his service he acquired many medals including the Gunnery [Bofort guns], RAF Service Medal 1939 to 1945, The Burma Star, The Battle of Britain and Defense Medal. Lewis married Catherine Hirshal in 1951, and they had two children. The family of four immigrated to Canada in 1965 and obtained their Canadian citizenship in 1971. They lived in the Municipality of East York and Lewis was a 32-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Todmorden Branch 10 and was awarded his Life Membership. Lewis passed away on September 18, 2003. BARKER, Delbert W. Delbert was born in Campbellford, Ontario on May 7, 1921. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) on May 9, 1942, and served with the Hasty P’s in Canada, Britain, and Central Mediterranean Area. He was discharged on April 3, 1946. On June 25, 1977, he moved to Trent River, Ontario. Delbert was a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Havelock Branch 389. Delbert passed away on September 13, 2007.
