285 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McDONALD, Daniel Leon Daniel was born on April 19, 1892, to Norman and Janet McDonald. He did have relatives that lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and John resided in Tarbutt Township, Ontario at some point. He enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 52nd Manitoba Battalion. On August 28, 1918, at the age of 26, Private Daniel McDonald was killed in action east of Arras, France. On his death certificate, it states “circumstances of death unknown.” In 1921, his next of kin, Janet McDonald and Norman McGregor in Sault Ste. Marie were notified of his re-interment in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery in Houcourt, France. His name is inscribed on the cenotaph in the Port Findlay Cemetery, east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. McDONALD, Edgar Kenneth Edgar was born Goulais River, Ontario on April 18, 1914. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force on April 11, 1942. His service records state: “impresses as a tall, well-built chap with an alert and intelligent manner, born and brought up on a farm, shows himself to be a resourceful chap with a good learning ability, and sincere attitude”. Ed was a soldier of the Canadian Grenadier Guards, 22nd Armoured Regiment, 4th Canadian Armoured Division, He enlisted at Camp Borden on April 11, 1942. Ed spent nineteen months overseas during World War II, landing in the UK then off to Northwestern Europe. He was involved with the Allied Liberation of Holland. His medals received were the France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the 1939-1945 Star. He also received a plaque from the citizens of Aeldon, Holland for untold bravery on the night of April 6, 1945, when the town was liberated from the cruelty of the Germans. Ed’s discharge document – March 13, 1946 states: “He expects to return home and combine seasonal farming with commercial fishing” and that is exactly what he did. Edgar passed away on July 24, 1984. McGILL, Robert Smith Robert was born in Elderslie Township, Ontario, on June 20, 1922. He was a public school teacher in Elderslie Township before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular) as a Flying Officer, Navigator on July 6, 1942 with 104 Squadron. He was declared missing in action/presumed dead as of May 13, 1944 when his Wellington was shot down and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea near the Island of Elba, off the Italian coast. Robert was a few weeks shy of his 22nd birthday when he perished in the service to his country.
